Often called simply Klee Kai or AKK – this breed is still quite young

The breed originated in the 1970s in Alaska, when Linda S. Spurlin and her family set out to breed a Husky-like dog primarily suited as a companion.

To achieve this, she crossed Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Huskies, American Eskimo Dogs, and the Schipperke. The name “Klee Kai” comes from the Inuit language and means “small dog.” The AKK comes in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy.

In addition to size, the breed is distinguished from the Husky by larger ears and a higher-set waist. So far, the Alaskan Klee Kai has not yet been recognized as a breed by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale).
